I am a fan of the kitchen, because I am a fan of eating. Not dining out, but feasting at home.
My enthusiasm for cooking began with a curiosity about math, and my mother taught me fractions using measuring cups. Before I was ten I was the family baker, eager to make sure my siblings and I were well supplied with sweets.
In my twenties I finally got curious about cooking savories, and in my thirties, inspired by managing a farmers’ market and starting a garden, I got interested in local eating.
Now in my forties, I juggle budgets of time, energy and money to try to feed my family well without washing pots and pans in my sleep, or taking out a second mortgage. These posts illustrate what foods and flavors, from near as our dirt and far as Thailand, are colonizing my fridge and counters.
I also write fiction and nonfiction. Some of my writings are at www.amyhalloran.net
